I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside
There is nothing better than the great British seaside resorts and the south coast has plenty of these to offer. Your day will begin in the Victorian resort of Bexhill-on-Sea where you will enjoy a cup of tea or coffee in the elegant, Modernist Pavilion which sits on the promenade. After lunch your guide will take you to Eastbourne, ‘Sunniest Place in Britain’.
Morning Tea at Bexhill-on-Sea
Your friendly local guide will meet you just outside of Bexhill and you will continue on into the town. This town was once a popular Victorian resort where it was the fashion to come and take the waters. The Pavilion was built in 1935 when it was one of the first Modernist buildings in Britain. It is still an outstanding architectural icon today. On arrival enjoy a cup of tea or coffee in the café which offers fantastic views across the sea. You can sit here watching the waves all morning. Or perhaps, once you have finished your drink, you might like to stroll along the promenade.
Admire the Views at Beachy Head
Beachy Head, the highest chalk cliff in Britain, has made numerous appearances in film and TV. An example is the opening sequence of the James Bond film ‘The Living Daylights’. Its name has nothing to do with its proximity to the beach but appears as ‘Beauchef’ in records dating from 1274 and is a corruption of the original French words meaning ‘beautiful headland’.
Lunch at The New Wilmington Hotel
This charming hotel is just a two minute stroll away from the seafront in the heart of Eastbourne. In this stylishly renovated hotel you can enjoy a two-course lunch with tea and coffee.
Sunny Eastbourne
After lunch your guide will take you into the heart of Eastbourne, which has earned the title of ‘Sunniest Place in Britain’. It has always had a reputation for being a place to come for quiet relaxation. The shingle beach is the perfect place to sit and while away an afternoon, or you may like to walk along the recently restored pier and browse the shops on the quaint Victorian streets of Little Chelsea. Eastbourne emerged as a seaside resort in the 19th century. Its growth enhanced by the arrival of the railway allowing more people to visit. It became known as the ‘Empress of Watering Places’ and is still a popular destination today.
