A Cosy Yuletide Escape to the Black Forest

One of Germany’s most varied holiday destinations, the Black Forest is a wonderful place to relax at Christmas. The region boasts gentle valleys, waterfalls, spectacular gorges and mountains densely covered with fir and spruce. Known for its timber farmhouses, traditional local costume, cuckoo clocks and, of course, Gâteau, the Schwarzwald offers plenty to see and do.

In the heart of Oberharmersbach…

The charming, family-run Hotel Bären is definitely a firm favourite with our guests. Oberharmersbach is a decidedly quaint village in the Black Forest. During your festive stay, you’ll undoubtedly feel like you’ve stepped into a scene from a Christmas card.  In addition to its wonderland setting, the hotel serves three course dinners each evening and a delicious five course Christmas feast with live music!  Furthermore, when staying at the Hotel Bären, benefit from a low single room supplement.

Experience the beautiful Black Forest region!

During this tour, visit also the beautiful town of Freiburg. Potter through the medieval Old Town, where pastel hued buildings, some featuring intricate decoration, hug the edges of squares. Take time to admire some of the city’s ornate doorways, and enjoy the region’s famous gâteau in cosy cafés. On Christmas eve, the final window of the nearby Gengenbach’s advent calendar will be opened, leaving the town hall aglow. The Black Forest is also a great base for trips further afield to the Rhine, Switzerland or France. Why not visit the scenic city of Strasbourg, with its renowned Cathedral, Astronomical Clock and scenic waterways?

With beautiful landscape and charming towns aplenty, the Black Forest will fill you with festive spirit. Celebrate Christmas in this fairytale setting!

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1-2

Travel to the Black Forest

Make your way through France, stopping for an overnight in the Reims area before arriving in the stunning Black Forest on day 2. Check in to your hotel.  If time permits, begin exploring this winter wonderland or settle in and enjoy the view over a hot drink.

Day 3

Christmas Eve

This beautiful corner of the world is the perfect backdrop to your festivities.  Today, perhaps enjoy an excursion to Freiburg.  Known as the Jewel of the Black Forest, it is a beautiful cobbled town with rows of multi-coloured buildings. Or visit the nearby town of Gengenbach, with its scrumptious chocolate box old town of half-timbered buildings.  Marvel at the world’s largest advent calendar house – the Town Hall – whose windows glow with festive merriment.

Otherwise you can enjoy the natural splendour of this area with an excursion to the magnificent Lake Titisee.  A glacial lake surrounded by forest, this is a truly beautiful sight.  If you’re blessed with snow, you may find yourself in a true winter wonderland.

Day 4

Christmas Day

Why not start off your Christmas Day with a wonderful stroll through the village?  Celebrate with a turkey lunch and a five course candle-lit dinner, accompanied by live music.  This is a truly relaxing way to spend the festive period. Looking around the Black Forest, you may think you’re in a scene from a Christmas card!

Day 5

Boxing Day

Perhaps pop into Switzerland to visit the spectacular Rhine Falls.  Formed in the last ice age, these are the largest falls in Switzerland.  You might even choose to enjoy a boat ride on the Rhine or to enjoy the scenery from one of the viewing platforms.  The falls are also overlooked by two small castles.

Alternatively, you may wish to cross the border to France and visit the city of Strasbourg. Enjoy the charming and crooked medieval streets and spectacular cathedral.

Day 6-7

Departure

Pack up your memories of a delightful Christmas in the Black Forest and commence your homeward journey. Perhaps you’ll have time for a final slice of Black Forest Gâteau before you depart!
