Blissful Bruges: A Valentine’s Get Away
A quaint medieval town, pottering along winding streets and cruising on canals – what could be more romantic? Escape to Bruges for a wonderful Valentine’s break in this charming little town.
Around every corner, beautiful architecture and picturesque canals await. This beauty is epitomised at the idyllic Lake of Love where swans swim serenely. Glide over the waters yourself to see the city from a new vantage point. During your leisurely canal cruise, wind through the city and pass under the many bridges.
Perhaps visit the fascinating Historium museum. There you follow a love story set in medieval Bruges, thus learning more about life in the city during that era. Gain insight into art, religion and trade. There you can also enjoy a virtual reality tour of the town or relax with a Belgian beer tasting.
As one of Europe’s best preserved cities, it’s easy to understand why Bruges is popular throughout the year. The imposing Belfry towers over Bruges’ old market square. Why not climb it for sweeping views of this fairytale setting? The chance to visit the Notre Dame church will thrill art lovers because it houses Michelangelo’s Madonna. Furthermore, the city’s many museums host numerous fine examples of Flemish Art.
Based at our favourite hotel in Bruges, the Academie Hotel, everything is on your doorstep for a fantastic Valentine’s Day break. And you can easily visit Brussels or Antwerp for a day to see even more of this incredible country!
Arrive in Bruges
Cross from Dover to Calais by Ferry and continue on to Bruges. Upon arrival check into your hotel and if time allows begin exploring this remarkable place. An evening stroll along the cobbled streets with street lights reflecting on the canals is always a delight.
Explore Bruges and Canal Cruise
Take a stroll along Bruges’ historic streets and discover beautiful views and buildings along the many waterways that give the city the nickname of the ‘Venice of the North’. A guided tour can be also arranged if you wish to gain greater insight into this fascinating town. When exploring the historic centre, a good starting point is the Grote Markt, the main square in the centre of Bruges, bounded by colourful, ornate, historic gable-housed buildings. The Town Hall and the fascinating Church of the Holy Blood are popular attractions.
For a new perspective of the sights, we recommend you take a cruise along the canal (subject to canals not being frozen!). This is a relaxing and romantic way to see Bruges as you glide along the tranquil waters passing by medieval buildings. Afterwards, there are many further sights which can be explored. The Kantcentrum lace centre is highly recommended. Lace is an iconic export of Belgium and the museums is highly interesting. Additionally, during the afternoons, there are demonstrations. Bobbins mesmerise, swapping with impressive speed, as the ladies create beautiful and intricate pieces.
Chocolates and Beer
In addition to lace, Belgium is known for its culinary exports. Why not visit one (or a few) of the family-owned chocolatiers to buy souvenirs (and presents)? There are plenty around so simply pop in on your way between the other sights!
Highly recommended is the Historium Brugge which offers a fresh take on the standard museum experience. The love story of an assistant to Flemish painter Jan van Eyck plays out in medieval Bruges. Move between different rooms as the story develops, each designed to look, feel and sound like the middle ages. The visitor is then brought to a more traditional museum area, and a balcony with a stunning view of the market square and the Belfry.
Complete your visit of the Historium at the museum’s own Duvelorium bar, stocked with delicious Belgian brews. Enjoy the view of the square over a beer or two, or learn about Belgium’s beers with a tasting.
The time has come to depart from this beautiful and romantic town. Perhaps there’s time for a last stroll hand in hand past the canals and over the little bridges before you begin your journey back to the UK.
