Copenhagen: Northern Europe's Premier Capital

People often describe Copenhagen as ‘the happiest city in the world’. During this tour you are sure to find out why! The home of ‘hygge’ – a Danish concept meaning cosiness and friendliness, this city will charm and leave you with some amazing memories. Brimming with amazing parks and bicycles filling the streets, Copenhagen is one of the greenest cities in the world. This, combined with its award-winning cuisine and impressive sights, means it is no wonder the city is becoming increasingly popular with visitors from around the world.

Denmark’s capital is both modern and historic, boasting innovative design perfectly contrasted with grand palaces dating back centuries. In fact, Denmark’s monarchy is the oldest in the world! During your stay, the city’s most famous sites like the colourful Nyhavn harbour and the Little Mermaid statue are not to be missed. Take in the amazing culture on offer, all while being a part of Copenhagen’s unique and fun atmosphere.

A City Steeped in History, Discover Copenhagen!

Although famous for its innovation, Copenhagen also has a variety of beautiful landmarks on its doorstep where you can learn more about Denmark’s rich history. Journey out of the city to Kronborg Castle, the grand setting of Shakespeare’s epic play Hamlet. Additionally, travel north to visit the beautiful Frederiksborg Castle, one of Europe’s grandest renaissance castles. Going back even further, watch history come to life at the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde. Here you will learn all about Scandinavia’s fascinating heritage and where the Vikings began.

With its mix of old and new, its iconic sights and undiscovered gems, this is a city break that has something for everyone to enjoy!

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1-3

Travel to Denmark

Cross from Dover to Calais by ferry then continue through the Low Countries and Germany towards Denmark, making overnight stops in Antwerp and Hamburg. On day 3, travel to the German port of Puttgarden for the short ferry crossing to Rødby in Denmark, before continuing  to the island of Sealand and on to Copenhagen. Arrive at the hotel, your base for the next 4 nights. Have dinner at a nearby restaurant and if time permits, take some time to explore your surroundings.

Day 4

Guided tour of the city

This morning, we enjoy a guided sightseeing tour of Copenahgen. The tour takes in the colourful Nyhavn harbour area, the Royal Palace of Amalienborg and the Changing of the Guard, the Royal Theatre and the Parliament. After the tour there’s free time to explore the city. It wouldn’t be a visit to Copenhagen without going to see the famous ‘Little Mermaid’ statue. Perhaps take a canal cruise, or enjoy a little retail therapy along the famous pedestrianised Strøget or visit the famous Tivoli Gardens, one of the oldest amusement parks in the world. What’s more, you could see the sights and feel like a local on one of Copenhagen’s City Bikes (Bycyklen).

Day 5

Hamlet’s Castle and Frederiksborg Castle

Today we take an hour’s drive north to the Baltic gateway port of Helsingør, the location of Denmark’s famous Kronborg Castle, which was the setting for Shakespeare’s epic Elizabethan drama, Hamlet. Built in 1574-1585, Kronborg’s elaborate renaissance and baroque interiors will send you back in time. In the afternoon we visit the picturesque Frederiksborg Castle, one of Europe’s grandest Renaissance castles and the largest in Scandinavia. Built across three islands in a lake with more than 70 richly decorated rooms, this castle also houses the Danish Museum of National History.

Day 6

Sweden: Malmö and Lund

Today travel from Copenhagen to Malmö, the journey taking you across the impressive Øresund Bridge, the longest combined  road and rail bridge in Europe (and ‘star’ of the popular TV series ‘The Bridge’). First stop is the 13th century city of Malmö, Sweden’s gateway port to Europe, with its attractive old town. We then continue to Lund, a charming but little known university town where an astronomical clock strikes twice a day in the cathedral. Visit ‘Kulturen’, a fascinating open-air museum with a collection of original Swedish rural houses.

Day 7

Roskilde, Viking Ship Museum and Old Fisherman’s Village

The Viking town of Roskilde is home to a remarkable cathedral where almost all Danish kings and queens are buried. The Viking Ship Museum displays the remains of five original 11th century ships, through which you can experience what life as a Viking was like. Later, drive to the pretty 18th century fishing village of Dragør and enjoy some sea air on the harbour side. A walk among the half-timbered thatched cottages with their postage stamp-sized gardens offers a vivid impression of what life was like a couple of centuries ago.

Day 8-10

Depart Copenhagen

It’s time to leave Copenhagen and return to the UK. Follow your tracks back to southern Denmark, crossing at Rødby to Puttgarden, and then down through Hamburg and Antwerp. On day 9, make your way across the Channel from Calais to Dover and onto home.
