Coventry Cathedral and Walking Tour
Today we meet our guide in the heart of the city, at the gardens of Lady Godiva’s Cathedral, where we walk the tranquil grounds and learn about Coventry’s rich history. Next we walk to ‘Coventry Cathedral’ which is in fact two buildings that lie at the very heart of the city of Coventry. The newly built Cathedral stands next to the ruins of the ‘old Cathedral’ which was destroyed during the Blitz. Our next stop is St Mary’s Guildhall, which boasts a long list of esteemed visitors including Shakespeare and Mary Queen of Scots. The afternoon is free to explore Coventry’s many shops and restaurants.
Warwick – Lord Leycester Hospital and St Mary’s Church
Lord Leycester Hospital is a historic group of medieval timber-framed buildings dating from the late 14th Century. In the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the buildings became a place of retirement for old warriors who had fought in the Elizabethan era wars. These soldiers are known to this day as the Brethren and with the Master, still live within the walls of the building. One of the Brethren will be your tour guide.
After time in Warwick, we take a short stroll to St Mary’s Church, one of the largest churches in Britain. It is well known for the stunning medieval Beauchamp Chapel with intricate stained glass and medieval and Tudor tombs, including that of Sir Robert Dudley, a favourite courtier of Queen Elizabeth I (a small donation is appreciated on the day).
On your way home you may wish to call into nearby Stratford-upon-Avon, birthplace of William Shakespeare.
