Shuttleworth Collection, Swiss Garden and Wrest Park.
Today we head for The Shuttleworth Collection, a museum founded in 1928 with a variety of vintage aircraft, most of which still fly. Next door, and in complete contrast, is the Swiss Garden, an outstanding example of the Regency fashion for creating landscapes in a picturesque alpine style. In the afternoon we head to Wrest Park (English Heritage), a grand French chateau in miniature, with stunning lawns, wooded walks and flower gardens.
Woburn Abbey and Gardens and Bletchley Park.
This morning we travel to Woburn Abbey and Gardens, the home of the Duke and Duchess of Bedford. Our visit begins with a two-mile drive through Woburn’s extensive deer park. In Woburn Abbey itself there are over 250 works of art displayed in more than 20 rooms, including the largest collection of Venetian views by Canaletto. There’s time to explore the attractive gardens before a light lunch. We then travel to nearby Bletchley Park, the central site for Britain’s codebreakers during WWII. Don’t miss the restored codebreaking ‘huts’ and the museum that displays an original ‘Enigma’ machine, and listen for the atmospheric wartime soundscapes in the grounds.
