Dates

April - October 2022

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1

Depart the UK

Take an overnight crossing to the Netherlands, perhaps enjoy a delightful evening meal on board.

Day 2

Floriade Expo

Spend a full day exploring the living laboratory that is Floriade. Discover new developments and be touched by what you see and see the many attractions, lots of art and culture, and with a unique collection of trees, shrubs, and flowers.

Floriade Expo 2022 will be an extraordinary expo. For six months the attention to the theme ‘Growing Green Cities’ will be focused on the cities of the future. Visitors will have a unique and meaningful experience: while visiting the expo they will be invited to ‘explore, touch and change’.

This expo will also be the start of a new city district close to Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Almost everything that will be built for the exhibition will become part of the legacy of Almere. The structures will remain and become part of the community. As part of this innovative exhibition concept, Floriade Expo 2022 will stimulate innovation and the development of solutions that can benefit us all. It will be a living laboratory and a platform for smart solutions.

The expo site will be developed as a Green City Arboretum, serving as a model for green structure development in cities. This arboretum will consist of a variety of trees, shrubs, perennials, creepers, hydrophytes and flower bulbs, all of which contribute to a green, healthy and sustainable city. Around 3000 species have been selected that contribute to the green city in terms of biodiversity, air purification, food production and city climate management.

The arboretum will be planted in alphabetical order. Each lot within the grounds will be allocated a letter of the alphabet. A four-meter wide strip around each lot will contain plants and trees, the Latin names of which starts with the letter allocated to the lot. We invite participants to choose planting that bears a relationship to their exhibit, country or city of origin.

Afterwards, return to the hotel for dinner.

Day 3

Heritage Boat and Volendam

This morning travel to the town of Enkhuizen. From here, you can see the remarkable Houtribdijk, a 17- mile dyke and dam completed in 1975 as part of the Zuiderzee land reclamation project. In Enkhuizen, we board the museum ship ‘Friesland’ for a relaxing cruise on the IJsselmeer to Medemblik. There’s free time for lunch before heading back to Volendam for some free time.

Enjoy some free time in Volendam before making your way back to the port for your overnight sailing.
