Fred. Olsen – French River Weekend – 2022
Sails from Southampton
As the busy Christmas period approaches, you can treat yourself to a well-earned break enjoyed amongst the sights and delights of beautiful French cities and countryside. After an overnight sail from Southampton, you’ll wake to views of the rolling forested valleys, lush-green fields and pretty communes that flank the winding River Seine, as Braemar takes you on a serene journey to Rouen.
Once docked at Normandy’s historic, culture-rich capital, you’ll be afforded ample time to explore at your leisure and take in its highlights; within the centre of the city, medieval and renaissance treasures, such as the symbolic Gothic cathedral, Gros Horloge and plethora of half-timbered houses, and the exact spot where Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake, await. Outside the cathedral, you could stop by the traditional Christmas market, for local treats and hot calvados too. Alternatively, you could opt for a tour to Paris, to experience the magic of a wander along the Champs Elysées at night, see the illuminated Eiffel Tower and much more.

Rouen, France
The ‘City of a Hundred Bells’, Rouen, is capital of the French region of Normandy. This 2,000-year-old port city on the River Seine, important in Roman times and the Middle Ages, is a unique city rich with monuments and museums. Rouen’s narrow pedestrianised streets lined with tall, half-timber houses and a statue marking the spot where Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake, is a pointer to the city’s dark history. Devastated by fire, the plague and bombs in the past, modern Rouen is now a vibrant cultural centre, and one of Normandy’s most engaging destinations. The skyline is dominated by the spires of Cathédrale Notre-Dame, much-painted by Claude Monet. The Gothic churches of Saint-Maclou and Saint-Ouen are also must-see attractions, two of the best examples of gothic architecture in France and a important part of Rouen’s history.
