Fred. Olsen – Norway’s Mountains & Scenic Fjords – 2022
Sails from Edinburgh
During time spent on board Braemar, and ashore in four fjordland destinations, you’ll experience the scenic beauty of Norway’s waterways and wonders to the full. Enjoy diversions into Lysefjord and Eresfjord, only accessible to smaller ships, and sail the glassy waters of Hardangerfjord, Nordfjord and Langfjord, where scenes of mighty mountains, verdant valleys and rugged rock faces come into view. You’ll also cruise by the Hornelen sea cliff, and get to see Fureberg waterfall within Maurangerfjord.
You could take tours to the Trollveggan ‘Troll Wall’ and Trollstigen ‘Troll Road, to marvel at their mountainous landscapes; these scenic wonders are within reach from both Andalsnes and Molde. Andalsnes is the starting point for journeys on the scenic Rauma Railway, which slinks through gorgeous fjord landscapes, too. When in Olden, perhaps seek-out magnificent glaciers in nearby valleys, or ride the Loen Skylift to the peak of Mount Hoven for unforgettable fjordland views. At Eidfjord, a fjord kayaking experience is highly recommended, though you could opt to tour to see the Vøringsfossen waterfall in all its glory.

Cruising Lysefjord, Norway
The Lysefjord is a stunning example of the Norwegian fjords’ spectacular natural beauty. Carved into the landscape by glacier movement in the Ice Age approximately 10,000 years ago, Lysefjord is lined by magnificent mountains and dramatic cliff faces – some soaring over 1,000 metres high into the unpolluted skies above.
In some sections of the fjord the water is as deep as the mountains are high, however at the shallowest point the water depth drops to just 13 metres. This means only small ships such as those in the Fred. Olsen fleet can cruise the Lysefjord.
Sailing along the glassy waters on board a smaller cruise ship is without doubt the best way to take in the fjord’s eclectic sights. Lookout for tumbling waterfalls, wonderful wildlife and pretty settlements dotted along the shores; and marvel at the sight of the impressive Lysefjordbrua suspension bridge as so you sail into the fjord.
On a clear day it is possible to see the famous Preikestolen – a huge 604 metre-high flat mountain plateau – and Kjeragbolten, a large rock wedged in one of Mount Kjerag’s crevices. If you’re very lucky you may hear the gunshot-like bang of Kjeragsmellet – an unexplained natural phenomenon that’s particularly prominent in the winter months.

Eidfjord, Norway
The picturesque village of Eidfjord, set within the breath-taking Hardangerfjord, is a gateway to some of the region’s most spectacular natural features and possibly the most beautiful place in the Norwegian fjords. Located beneath a back-drop of soaring, snow-peaked mountains, engraved with rivers and waterfalls, Eidfjord begs for exploration and presents some of the fjordland’s greatest photo opportunities The village’s tranquil feel extends to the lush fields that run for miles, meandering through clusters of wood-slat homes in ice-cream hues.
Two quaint churches, one dated back to 1309, are both worth exploring, while the Troll Train offers a 50-minute guided tour of this stunning region. From the train you can experience Eidfjord’s exquisite scenery and Hæreid, the largest Viking burial site from the Iron Age.
Hiking is very popular in the area, and for those keen sports enthusiasts, kayaking down the dramatic, mountain-flanked fjords is a must-do. Alternatively, visitors can head for the amazing Hardangervidda Nature Centre or the infamous Voringfossen Waterfall, a tumbling natural beauty set deep in the mountains of Måbødalen Valley.

Olden & Cruising Nordfjord & Hornelen, Norway
At its eastern end, the magnificent Nordfjord divides into three arms beneath the glaciers of the Jostedalsbreen, and Olden sits at the beginning of the southernmost of these arms. A charming village, Olden is among green meadows which are ablaze with colourful flowers throughout the summer, and through which babbling brooks meander between pretty houses.
The sixth longest Norwegian fjord, and one of the most picturesque, beautiful Nordfjord stretches from mainland Norway’s western-most point – overlooking Stadhavet, Sunnmørsalpene and Ålfotbreen – to the magnificent Jostedalsbreen, Europe’s largest inland glacier. Afterwards, enjoy a scenic cruise alongside Hornelen with Fred. Olsen offers you the opportunity to get closer to Europe’s highest sea cliff. Gliding gently through some of the most beautiful natural landscapes on earth you’ll stand in awe as you gaze upwards toward the summit of this incredible landmark from the comfort of your ship’s decks.

Molde & Cruising Langfjorden & Eresfjorden, Norway
Depending on your preference, Molde is the town of roses or jazz. Sitting alongside the Romsdalfjord, the town benefits from rich, fertile soil and a mild climate and the town’s gardens – both public and private – are full of flowers, especially roses. In the market square is a statue of the Little Rose Seller.
Deep within the magnificent Romsdalfjorden, diversions into Langfjorden and Eresfjorden – two picturesque, lesser-known arms of one of Norway’s most famous fjords – on board one of Fred. Olsen’s smaller ships makes for a memorable scenic cruising experience.

Åndalsnes, Norway
Surrounded by the incredible mountains of the Romsdalsfjord, Åndalsnes is often referred to as the ‘Alp town by the fjord’. Situated at the mouth of the Rauma River, the town is in one of the most beautiful areas of scenic Norway, and a natural starting point for forest walks in the hilly terrain and short hikes to magnificent viewpoints.
With all its natural attractions, this beautiful destination is one of Norway’s most popular locations for sightseers and a mecca for hikers. Known as the ‘Mountaineering Capital’, Åndalsnes is close to the mighty Trollveggen (The Troll Wall), the tallest vertical rock face in Europe – an appealing challenge for many climbers. Many visitors, who wish to enjoy the sights with a little less effort, can take the Rauma Railway into the mountains to discover amazing views.
