Fred. Olsen – Remembrance Beaches & Battlefields – 2022
Sails from Tilbury
Coinciding with Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday, and including time at places known for their links with, or close proximity to, events in the world wars, this cruise provides a unique opportunity to pay your respects to the fallen. At Dunkirk you can step foot on the sands of the infamous battle beaches, or head to the Belgian city of Ypres to visit the Great War battlefields and take a moment at the Menin Gate Memorial. Also in Belgium, a visit to Liège, where the opening engagement between the Germans and Belgians in World War One took place, on tour from Antwerp is highly recommended.
Back on French shores, Bolette stops at Boulogne-sur-Mer, the closest port to the Somme. You’ll be ideally placed to discover iconic World War Two battlefields, and to visit the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing, with its fascinating museum dedicated to remembering the brave soldiers that lost their lives in the fierce battles of the Somme. Finally, from Honfleur, you can head for some of the most famous sites from France’s involvement in war, from Omaha Beach and Utah Beach to Pegasus Bridge.

The coastal port of Dunkirk is the third largest harbour in France. Famous for its role in the evacuation of allied troops in World War II, the Dunkirk 1940 Museum documents activities around the city during Operation Dynamo.
The Musée Portuaire displays exhibits of images about the history and presence of the port and has a number of historic ships, including the impressive Duchesse Anne, built in 1901 and moored alongside. The Musée des Beaux-Arts has a large collection of Flemish, Italian and French paintings and sculptures, and a visit is recommended, while the family-friendly soft sands of Malo-les-Bains beach are also worth a stroll.
12 - 13 November 2022
Belgium’s charming, medieval city of Antwerp is the country’s biggest port and often recognised as its capital of cool. It has proved an alluring city for centuries, attracting lovers of art, fashion and, of course, diamonds – over 80% of the world’s rough diamonds pass through the city’s famous diamond district at some point or other. Renowned for its charm and sparkle, Antwerp was one of Europe’s principle cities in the mid-16th century and has maintained the essence of its medieval past, despite severe bombing during World War II.

Boulogne-sur-Mer lies at the heart of the Côte d’Opale, and as one of France’s key fishing ports, the town is full of historical, cultural and gastronomic delights. One particular highlight, is Boulogne’s 12th century Belfry, which is a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site, and currently home to a museum of Celtic remains from the Roman occupation. Boulogne also features a 19th century cathedral, which was built as a replacement to its predecessor, destroyed during the revolution.
15 - 16 November 2022
Historic Honfleur in northern France’s Lower Normandy region is a quaint little port with a rich cultural and artistic heritage. One of France’s most visited towns, Honfleur – with its beautiful 15th and 16th century architecture and distinctive harbour – was the inspiration for Impressionist painters and poets.
Vieux-Bassin, Honfleur’s colourful old harbour, is lined with 16th to 18th-century lofty slate-and-timber fronted houses. Its sloping cobbled streets have long been a subject for artists including Claude Monet and native son, Eugène Boudin.
