Fred. Olsen – Revisiting Prussia – 2022
Sails from Edinburgh
There are symbolic sites to uncover throughout; amongst the highlights are the seven surviving city gates of Kaliningrad – the birthplace of the First King of Prussia – in Russia’s Kaliningrad Oblast exclave and, in Poland, Gdansk’s Teutonic Order-era, UNESCO-listed Melbork Castle and Szczecin many monuments dedicated to Bismarck.
In Germany, tour from Travemunde to Berlin and see its mix of Prussian treasures, from imposing Brandenburg Gate to the gilded gems of Charlotteburg Palace. Alternatively, perhaps head to Potsdam to explore the beautiful grounds of Frederick the Great’s summer retreat and final resting place, Sanssouci Palace. You’ll enjoy a rare visit to the picturesque resort town of Sassnitz on Rugen Island too, while there are plenty of memories to make during your time on board Braemar, especially during scenic cruising through the Kiel Canal’s countryside scenes

Szczecin, Poland
Found off of Europe’s well trodden tourist track, the Polish city of Szczecin is an undiscovered gem of sorts. It is a lively city, awash with students and locals going about their busy day-to-day, but for visitors there is a real sense of discovery to be experienced and enjoyed here.
Situated on the estuary of the Oder River, Szczecin boasts the kind of picturesque coastline scenery that you’d usually only find at seaside towns, and there are many small waterways to explore within the city’s confines. Take in sights of ornate bridges and impressive 19th century architecture that reflect in the still waters, via foot or perhaps on a kayaking tour. At the docklands, old cranes symbolise the city’s former past as an important port, juxtaposed by the modern boulevards, trendy cafés and high-end apartments of live in Szczecin today.

Gdansk, Poland
Considered the country’s maritime capital, boasting one of the largest ports in the Baltic and over a thousand years of seafaring traditions and heritage, Gdansk is amongst Poland’s most important and dynamic cities.
the busyness of its bustling port though, Gdansk is far more laidback than it may seem on the surface. A delight to explore, the city features an abundance of attractions, discovered in and around scenes of charming historic streets, riverside walkways and impressive boulevards begging to showcase their highlights.

Baltisyk (Kallingrad), Russia
Formerly controlled by Germany and known as Konigsberg, Kaliningrad was largely destroyed by British bombing raids in World War Two and subsequently taken by the Soviet Union. Today, this historic Russian delight is a popular tourist destination, but can be tricky to visit due to Visa restrictions. Joining a tour to Kaliningrad during your call to Baltiysk is a great way to enjoy this interesting, attraction-packed city.
With its pretty parks, charming neighbourhoods and fantastic architecture, Kaliningrad is a joy to explore. Highlights to discover include the imposing Konigsberg Cathedral, which is home to one of the largest organs in Europe; historic fortifications such as Brandenberg Gate; the Bunker Museum; and one of Russia’s oldest and largest zoos. The Museum of the World Ocean is not-to-be-missed, boasting an incredible collection of displays and exhibits including a submarine, fishing boat, two scientific-research vessels and an icebreaker vessel.

Sassnitz, Germany
Sassnitz is a resort town on the German island of Rügen. It’s home to the submarine HMS Otus, now a naval museum. Jasmund National Park has trails through beech forests, plus towering chalk cliffs like the Königsstuhl, where a platform looks out over the Baltic Sea.

Travemünde, Germany
Travemünde is a coastal suburb of Lübeck – a magnificent UNESCO-listed town steeped in history and former capital of the Hanseatic League. Home to many wealthy merchants during the Hanseatic era, an array of wonderful gabled houses, stunning churches and public buildings with huge gates, vast towers and gilded steeples were built in Lübeck. These monuments of a by-gone era have to be seen to be believed and all are within easy reach of Travemünde.

Kiel Canal Transit, Germany
Connecting the North Sea, at the mouth of the Elbe River, to the Baltic Sea at Holtenau, the Kiel Canal is one of the world’s busiest and most important shipping routes. Slicing a man-made path through the German countryside, this 61-mile-long marvel of engineering allows vessels to avoid 250 nautical miles of sea sailing on average, ensuring a faster and safer passage through Europe.
As picturesque as it is important, the Kiel Canal is a popular route for ‘pleasure’ crafts and smaller-sized cruise ships such as those in the Fred. Olsen fleet. Sailing slowly along the canal presents an opportunity to take in gorgeous scenes of lush-green countryside and a collection of interesting villages and towns flanking the still waters, and marvel at several impressive bridges.
