Muncaster Castle and the Laurel & Hardy Museum

Today we take a leisurely drive through the scenic south and west Lake District to the fascinating Laurel & Hardy Museum in Ulverston, the birthplace of Stan Laurel. Learn about the life and times of Stan and Ollie, the world-famous film stars of the 1930s. In the afternoon we visit historic Muncaster Castle, perched high above the Cumbrian countryside with far-reaching views. A 40-minute audio tour, narrated by the Pennington family who have lived at Muncaster since 1208, takes you around the castle’s sumptuous state rooms full of beautiful furniture and artwork. You’ll hear about ‘Tom Fool’, aka Tom Skelton, the court jester at Muncaster in the 16th century. There’s also time to explore some of the 77 acres of tranquil gardens, and visit Muncaster’s Hawk and Owl Centre.

Day 3

Morecambe and historic Lancaster including The Judges’ Lodgings Museum

This morning we visit Morecambe, the birthplace of Eric Bartholomew, better known as comedian Eric Morecambe, who took his stage name from the town. Visit his statue as you stroll along the award-winning promenade with its spectacular views across the expanse of the bay, or take a walk on the sandy beach. In the afternoon we visit historic Lancaster and The Judges’ Lodgings Museum where we start with some light refreshments. This iconic Lancastrian building was constructed in the early 1600s, and was home to infamous gaoler of the Lancashire witches, Thomas Covell. It is now home to the world’s largest collection of Gillow & Co furniture and the Childhood Museum.
