Includes factory tour, Salmon tasting & lunch

Smoked salmon was introduced into the UK from Eastern Europe. Jewish immigrants from Russia and Poland brought the technique of salmon smoking to London’s East End, where they settled, in the late 19th century. They smoked salmon as a way to preserve it as refrigeration was very basic. In the early years, they were not aware that there was a salmon native to the UK so they imported Baltic salmon in barrels of salt water. However, having discovered the wild Scottish salmon coming down to the fish market at Billingsgate each summer, they started smoking these fish instead.

Join us on a Monday morning for a visit to Forman’s Fish Island Smokehouse, the East End’s last smokehouse, founded by Harry Forman in Stepney in 1905.  You will see behind the scenes at Britain’s oldest Smokery in the Old Smoke and enjoy a unique tour including a fascinating carving demonstration followed by a tasting and a two course lunch.

Your Sunday is free to explore at your own pace, but may we suggest an afternoon on the River Thames, on an all-weather cruise, or a visit to the top of the Shard, with a waiting glass of Champagne.

Check out the link to our department news, to see Mark and Jenny from Greatdays report on their recent visit: http://www.greatdays.co.uk/department-news/gone-fishing/

Dates

Limited Sundays in 2019

Suggested itinerary

Day 1 Sunday

Travel to London, free time – lots to see and do

Arrive in London in the afternoon and check into your hotel.

Your afternoon and evening is at your leisure, we have lots of ideas and suggestions – how about a trip to the top of the Shard – at 310m, the tallest building in Western Europe, and when you arrive a welcome glass of Champagne. If the Shard’s a bit too high, the London Eye, at 135 m, is a little lower, and during the 30 minute trip, gives a great view of London.  Combine this with a river cruise for the full experience. The Museum of the Docklands in Canary Wharf tells the history of the Thames and the Docklands region, and is free to enter, and the area around the museum is a real mixture of old and new, great for wandering.

Maybe visit the Tower of London, and the crown jewels, and explore over 900 years of fascinating history.

We will be delighted to plan your afternoon, and offer suggestions for places to visit, and let you have the relevant supplements.

Day 2 Monday

Breakfast in hotel, Forman’s Smoked Salmon Factory and lunch

This morning you will have a full English buffet breakfast served in the hotel’s restaurant, then your fishy tour begins.

Britain’s Oldest Smokery

Make your way to Fish Island in Hackney (close to the Olympic Park) where you will begin your Forman’s Fish Island Smokehouse tour. Smoked salmon is serious business at H. Forman & Son. The business is the East End’s last smokehouse, founded by Harry Forman in Stepney in 1905, where today his great-grandson Lance Forman runs the show. Come and see behind the scenes; Forman’s use traditional methods of curing and carving salmon with state of the art forms of smoking salmon to produce the truly artisan London Cure Smoked Salmon. Enjoy a unique tour including a fascinating carving demonstration from their very own Guinness World Record Salmon slicer, Darren Matson (who beat Gordon Ramsay in the challenge!).  Includes a taster of the world famous ‘London Cure’ smoked salmon since 1905. (Minimum numbers of 25 apply).

The tour will last around 60 minutes.

After your tour you will enjoy a two course lunch at this amazing smokehouse venue at the Old Smoke, before starting your return jouney home.

Please note this will be a set two course lunch with tea/coffee or soft drink – menu will be sent in advance and all the group will have the same menu.

Don’t have the time for an overnight stay? We also offer this as a day trip Monday to Friday. Please click here for more details:
