Beautiful Warwick

Explore the Lord Leycester Hospital

Lord Leycester Hospital

The Hospital is a historic group of medieval timber-framed buildings on Warwick High Street. They are mainly dating from the late 14th century. Clustered round the Norman gateway into the town, the 12th century Chantry Chapel sits above it. In the reign of Queen Elizabeth I the buildings became, under the patronage of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, a place of retirement for old warriors who had fought in the Elizabethan era wars. These soldiers are known to this day as the Brethren and with the Master, still live within the walls of the building. Every morning they meet in the Chapel and pray together the words written by their founder Robert Dudley. One of the Brethren will be your tour guide.

The beautiful, tranquil Master’s Garden, open all year, features a Victorian pineapple pit.  Also, there’s a 2,000 year old “nilometer” which the ancient Egypts used to measure the height of the Nile. Furthermore, you can find a small thatched summer house favoured by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Lunch in the Brethren’s Kitchen

The Brethren’s Kitchen has been serving food for 500 years to Kings and Queens, Guildsmen, Tudor Earls, and Victorian literary and artistic figures. You will enjoy a two-course lunch with tea and coffee here.

St Mary’s Church

After your lunch, stroll the short distance to St Mary’s Church. The Church is a historic landmark, tourist attraction and busy parish church in the ancient town of Warwick. People have worshipped on this site for over 1,000 years and it is one of the largest churches in Britain.  It is also the final resting place of Robert Dudley, who founded the Lord Leycester Hospital.
