NCL – Scandinavia, Russia & Amsterdam: Ultimate Baltic – August 2019
Sails from Copenhagen
Sail from Copenhagen to explore Scandinavia, Russia & the Baltics
Explore the Baltics from Copenhagen, a journey which promises to be an exciting holiday steeped in history, art and culture. The capital of Denmark, Copenhagen, is filled with canals, cobbled squares and copper spires. But don’t let the historic appearance fool you. This is also Scandinavia’s most cosmopolitan city. Certainly you can relive medieval times in The Latin Quarter, but you can also enjoy some of Europe’s finest shopping, museums, cafes and nightlife prior to your cruise around the Baltics.
Your first port of call is Warnemünde and this town is all about promenading, eating fish, sipping cocktails, and lazing in a Strandkorb (sheltered straw ‘beach basket’ seat) on its long, wide and startlingly white beach. Walk along Alter Strom, the boat-lined main canal, you’ll pass a row of quaint cottages housing restaurants. For a fabulous view from above, climb the spiralling 135-step wrought-iron and granite staircase of the 1898-built lighthouse.
Travel through Tallinn’s Old Town within the medieval city walls amongst watchtowers, graceful spires and winding cobblestone streets. From St. Petersburg, head to Pushkin to visit the Tsar’s Village – ranked one of the masterpieces of the art world. During your walking tour of Helsinki, begin from Senate Square and visit many of the city attractions, including the world famous Rock Church built of bedrock and quarried stone. Experience the Baltic by land and by sea with Norwegian.

Warnemünde will surprise you with its villas, hotels and the large white and silver beach. Its heart is Am Strom, next to the port, where the homes of old captains and fishermen have been turned into coffee shops and boutiques.

Move up a couple centuries to experience Tsar Peter I’s Kadriorg Palace, filled with art and surrounded by sculpted gardens and peaceful woodlands.
Day 6 - Day 7
St Petersburg, Russia
Founded by the Russian Tsar, Peter the Great, St. Petersburg has for centuries been the cultural centre of Russia, with its spectacular architecture, Tchaikovsky operas and the famous Kirov ballet. It has undergone many changes over the decades, but ‘The Venice of the North’ remains a dazzling cruise destination, a Russian city with a European flair, a city with more than 200 museums, and one of the largest English gardens in Europe!
The Norwegian Getaway stays in port overnight so you have 2 days to see this beautiful city.
Welcome to Scandinavia’s ‘White City of the North’, a city defined more by its people and Art Nouveau architecture than its chilly climate (from October to April). Helsinki is a classic sea-city, with a dramatic coastline coloured by bays and inlets. The city keeps its historical roots intact.
When your cruise ship pulls into this small Swedish port, you’ll be greeted by ferries transporting travellers to Gotland island. The small and laidback town offers picture-taking opportunties from the surrounding scenic nature and of course, the Baltic Sea. One of Sweden’s best surfing beaches can be found here but also an interesting cultural history with rune stones from Viking times, churches from the 1100s, Sweden’s oldest lighthouse, and military facilities from the Cold War. In recent years, Nynäshamn has made its mark in the culinary world. Try the locally produced beer, smoked fish, chocolate, honey and sausage. Enjoy them at any of the hotels, cafés and restaurants or take them back home with you. If you wish to go all the way out into the archipelago, take the boat to Öja-Landsort.
