Bowood House & Gardens and Wadworth Brewery.
This morning we head off at a trot to visit the magnificent Bowood House and Gardens. Take a deep breath in the laboratory where Dr Joseph Priestley discovered oxygen in 1774 and enjoy the gardens and Grade I listed ‘Capability’ Brown landscape. Our next stop is the family-run Wadworth Brewery in Devizes for a fascinating private tour (there are many steps within the brewery). A highlight is a visit to the stables to see Monty and Max, Wadworth’s two working Shire horses. Alternatively enjoy a free afternoon strolling around this pretty canal-side market town, home of the Wiltshire Museum and Kennet & Avon Canal Museum.
Please note: the Wadworth Brewery tour duration is 2-2.5hrs. There are a number of stair cases, narrow corridors & uneven floors to negotiate, therefore it is essential that all who partake in the tour can walk unassisted and be of reasonable fitness.
Lacock Abbey and village, Fox Talbot Museum, Castle Coombe.
The picture postcard village of Lacock is famous for its picturesque streets, historic buildings, quaint tearooms, specialist shops, and as a TV and film location (the BBC’s ‘Cranford Chronicles’ and ‘Harry Potter’). At the Abbey, the atmosphere of the medieval rooms and cloister court give a sense of its monastic past. The museum celebrates the achievements of former Lacock resident, William Henry Fox Talbot, famous for his contributions to the invention of photography. After lunch we visit Castle Coombe, often voted the prettiest village in England. Take time to admire the Market Square where Steven Spielberg filmed scenes for ‘War Horse’.
Wiltshire White Horse’s Tour and return home.
We leave Wiltshire but not before we try and spot the famous White Horses, carved into the chalk downs, and dating as far back as 1742. How many will we find?
