Oberammergau Passion Play 2022 – Black Forest
Oberammergau is now rescheduled for 2022
The Oberammergau Passion Play takes place every ten years in the small village in Germany. Be there for the phenomenal 2022 Passion Play season then explore another of Germany’s wonders – The Black Forest!
In 1633, the Plague was ravaging Europe, including the small Bavarian village of Oberammergau. Amidst their suffering, the villages made a solemn vow to God. If they survived, every 10 years they swore to perform a Passion Play depicting Christ’s bitter suffering, death and resurrection. For hundreds of years since then, despite dangers and threats, they have loyally kept their vow. At each performance, the Play captivates pilgrims from all over the world. Although a cultural sensation, the Passion Play remains a fervent and impassioned act of worship.
Following this inspirational event, head to Germany’s bewitchingly beautiful Black Forest. This stunning area is Germany’s most varied holiday region, but also one of the largest and best known areas. Fir and spruce forests sprawl over mountains. Quaint timber farmhouses dot the landscape of gentle valleys. This is the home of spectacular gorges, awe-inspiring waterfalls and the famous black forest gâteau.
During this tour, visit the beautiful town of Freiburg. Potter through the medieval Old Town, where pastel hued buildings, some featuring intricate decoration, hug the edges of squares. Take time to admire some of the city’s ornate doorways, and enjoy the region’s eponymous gâteau in cosy cafés. Cruise along the scenic Lake Titisee and head to Triberg to see the highest waterfalls in Germany. Why not venture to Fürtwangen? There you can visit a museum all about another of this regions famous exports – the cuckoo clock!
