Royal Deeside, Ballater, Balmoral, Braemar
Take a leisurely journey through beautiful Royal Deeside to Ballater with time to explore this pretty Deeside village. We continue to Crathie Kirk to see where the Royal Family worships when they’re in residence at neighbouring Balmoral Castle. A mile or so further on is Balmoral Castle itself. Depending on the time of year there’s an opportunity to visit the gardens, gift shop and exhibitions. Alternatively, visit the nearby Royal Lochnager Distillery for a tour to see how age-old traditions and craftsmanship produce one of Scotland’s most exclusive whiskies. Our final stop is at Braemar, a beautiful village located deep in the Cairngorms National Park and surrounded by stunning mountain scenery.
A free day today to explore the ‘Granite City’. Highlights include the Aberdeen Maritime Museum with views over the harbour, Provost Skene’s House, dating from 1545 and showing how people lived in the 17th, 18th and 19th century, and The Tolbooth, a 17th century Scottish jail and one of the oldest buildings in Aberdeen.
A few miles north of Aberdeen is the National Trust for Scotland’s Pitmedden Garden, an elegant Scottish renaissance garden. At its heart is The Great Garden, originally laid out in 1645. In the afternoon we visit Castle Fraser, an atmospheric baronial castle dating back to the 15th century.
