SAIL Amsterdam – A Spectacular Maritime Event Held Only Every 5 Years!
A city of canals, world-famous museums and historical centres, Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most romantic and beautiful cities. Gabled buildings tilt, leaning higgledy-piggledy over the canals which crisscross the Dutch capital’s core. However, once every five years, SAIL Amsterdam draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to witness scores of tall ships sailing into the city, and to soak in the festival atmosphere along the harbour front. 2020 will be the 10th edition of this fantastic event
SAIL Amsterdam truly offers something for everyone. With so many ships, there is always something to see. Take the opportunity to board the vessels and marvel at their interiors. There are also a number of events taking place throughout the city. The centre is split into separate ‘Oceans’, each organising various themed events. The event runs from Wednesday 12th August, with the ships’ arrival to them sailing out of Amsterdam on Sunday 16th August – a fine sight to see!
When wandering about the city, why not visit the Van Gogh Museum or the Rijksmuseum with its wonderful collection of Rembrandt paintings. A engaging yet haunting attraction is the Anne Frank House, which houses the young girl’s powerful diary. The Grachtengordel district is undoubtedly the most charming part of the city, and the perfect place to stroll and absorb your surroundings. Other attractions include Gassan Diamonds, Heineken Experience or Madame Tussaud’s. A subtle but fascinating city, there’s always something to discover. From treasure trove boutiques to unusual facades and stalls of rainbow tulips, Amsterdam is bursting with little delights. When your feet begin to ache, sit back and relax in one of the many canal side cafes and restaurants. An Amsterdam city break is one of the must-do European destinations.
