This delightful day trip will give you an introduction to two of Shropshire’s most famous towns, Ironbridge and Bridgnorth. Some argue that Ironbridge was the place where the Industrial Revolution began, one of the most significant events in man’s history. Now it is a much quieter place and you can enjoy morning tea in one of the quaint tearooms or a stroll across the bridge.

Ironbridge: Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.

After meeting your knowledgeable guide, you will drive into the leafy town of Ironbridge. The town takes its name from the famous iron bridge built in 1779 at the height of the Industrial Revolution. Despite its deep industrial heritage Ironbridge is now an exceptionally picturesque little town. Independent shops and tearooms welcome you to enjoy refreshments or you can choose to take a stroll over the bridge itself. This renowned bridge is part of a World Heritage Site. It is pedestrianised so you can walk across at your leisure and take in the wonderful views.

Tales Tour: A Tale of Two Towns.

Your guide will tell you all about the history of these two famous Shropshire towns. You will hear about Ironbridge’s place in the history of the modern world and Roger de Montgomerie who built the Norman castle in Bridgnorth. You will pass by the River Severn, which at 220 miles, is the longest river in the UK.

Luncheon: Ye Olde Punch Bowl.

During the Civil War, Cromwell’s men were billeted in this quaint, stone built inn. There is still a stairway leading to the secret underground tunnels, carved out of the soft sandstone, which run under the town. Lunch consists of a delicious carvery and dessert, followed by tea and coffee.

A Trip on the Funicular Railway in Bridgnorth.

Another lovely town situated in the Severn Valley is Bridgnorth. Like Ironbridge’s, its name refers to a local bridge, but this time one built in the 9th century. Some experts believe that it was Hitler’s intention to make Bridgnorth the German headquarters in Britain, due to its central position in the UK, rural location, rail connections and now-disused airfield. You will take a trip on the town’s famous funicular railway, which was first used in the late 19th century. It is the steepest and oldest funicular railway in England. Also, it is a great way to get from the lower to the higher part of the town.
