The Herriot Trail
Meet your guide
Firstly, your guide will meet you at Thirsk Garden Centre. There will be an opportunity to get a coffee before you set off again.
Thirsk
Begin your day by exploring this pretty market town where the story of James Herriot begins. You can visit St Mary’s Church where James Herriot got married and the bustling cobbled market square which is the heart of the town.
Lunch at The Fauconberg Arms
Afterwards, enjoy a delicious two-course lunch in this haunted 17th century Inn. It is set in the picturesque village of Coxwold amidst the rolling green countryside of the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors and National Park.
Scenic Tour
Weather permitting, you will descend back towards Thirsk via Sutton bank, where the views are simply breathtaking. Be prepared for some steep winding roads but the vista will be worth it. You will also pass the White Horse of Kilburn carved into the limestone hillside. (If the weather is bad, your guide will choose an alternative route.)
The World of James Herriot
The Herriot trail comes to an end here. ‘It Shouldn’t Happen to a Vet‘ was the title of one of the books by celebrated author James Herriot (Alf Wight). He went on to become a well loved TV character in the series ‘All Creatures Great and Small‘. His story begins in a modest town house in Thirsk, North Yorkshire. This is the place where Alf worked in a practice alongside a real life ‘Siegfried’ and ‘Tristan Farnon’.
