It’s unsurprising that the Rhine and Moselle Valleys have long been a favourite with visitors from the UK. Between the breathtaking scenery and the warm welcome, this area has a lot to offer. On the banks of the majestic Rhine, you base, Boppard has half-timbered houses, churches that require a closer inspection, narrow alleyways and many Roman and medieval remains. There’s also a fine riverside promenade, ideal for a gentle stroll, or sitting and watching the many boats passing by.
From Boppard, you will explore the best of this region with little boats and trains. Trundle along a very scenic stretch of the Hünsruck railway – a steep adhesion railway. Furthermore, chug along in wooden carriages on the Vulkan railway. Relax as you cruise along the Moselle river. After exploring Cochem’s medieval squares and narrow streets, watch the scenery and towns of the Moselle Valley drift by. Another lovely cruise along the Rhine takes you past the Loreley statue to Rüdesheim.
Once you’ve visited this postcard perfect place, you’ll be sure to want to return. With tranquil views, delicious locally grown wines and a host of fairytale-worthy towns, the Rhine and Moselle Valleys are begging to be explored.

Day 1
Travel to the Rhine Valley
Enjoy the scenery unfolding as you travel to your hotel in Boppard.
Day 2
Boppard and the Hünsruck Railway
This morning take a guided walking tour of Boppard to discover its stories and secrets. Walk along to Boppard’s station for a return ride on the famous Hünsruck Railway. The 15km line to Emmelshausen is regarded as one of the most charming stretches of railway in Germany. It’s also the steepest adhesion railway in western Germany, at one point climbing 336 metres in just six kilometres. In the afternoon take the chair lift for a ride up to a plateau high above Boppard for some wonderful panoramic views of the Rhine.
Day 3
Rüdesheim and Rhine Cruise
Today we follow Rhine, stopping at St. Goar to view the world’s largest free-hanging cuckoo clock. We pass the famous Loreley Rock, and the roman village of Bacharach, crossing the Rhine by ferry to visit Rüdesheim, one of the most famous riverside towns on the Rhine. Take a stroll along the famous Drosselgasse, a lively, narrow cobbled street with bars, cafes and restaurants. Visit Siegfried’s Mechanical Museum to see and hear some remarkable musical instruments. Take a ride in a cable car over the vineyards to the Niederwald monument high above the town for some magnificent views. In the late afternoon we return by boat to Boppard.
Note: If a driver’s rest day is required, this excursion can be made by boat in both directions.
Day 4
Cochem and Moselle Cruise
This morning we take a scenic drive over the Hunsrück low mountain range to the ancient Moselle town of Cochem. The town enjoys a wonderful setting in one of the most romantic parts of the Moselle Valley, where the river curves between the Eifel and the Hunsrück mountains. There’s time to explore the old town to see the medieval squares, the beautiful baroque styled town hall built in 1739, the market-place with its ‘Martin’s Fountain’, and the old gabled houses built on steep, narrow alleys. We then take a relaxing cruise on the Moselle and Perhaps afterwards, visit a local vineyard for a tour and tasting.
Day 5
Koblenz and Vulkan
Koblenz looks like an illustration in a book of fairytales. Today we visit this beautiful place and then take a ride on the picturesque Vulkan Railway. As the express chugs from Brohl to Engeln, admire wooded scenery and little villages from your wooden carriage.
Day 6
Return to the UK
The time has come to leave the beautiful Moselle and Rhine valleys. Commence your homeward journey after breakfast.
Additional idea
Extend this tour and include a full day excursion to the romantic city of Heidelberg, famous for its majestic castle.
