Day 1

Travel to your hotel

If you’re travelling a distance, enquire about overnight stops.

Day 2

Inverness to the Kyle of Lochalsh

An early start today takes us on a wonderful two-and-a-half-hour scenic journey across the Top of Scotland’. The railway winds its way through spectacular Highland scenery, passing rugged mountains, tranquil lakes and shimmering lochs before arriving at the west coast port of Kyle of Lochalsh.

Here, there’s time to enjoy lunch and take in the magnificent views across to the Isle of Skye. Afterwards, meet your coach for a scenic drive through the Highlands as you make your way back to the hotel, with more breath-taking landscapes to enjoy along the route.

Day 3

Aviemore and the Strathspey Railway

Today we continue our journey to Aviemore, a beautiful mountain town nestled in the heart of the Cairngorms. With its picturesque setting and alpine-style character, Aviemore has the charm of a traditional Swiss ski village, providing the perfect opportunity to enjoy some free time and explore at your leisure.

The highlight of the day is a journey aboard the Strathspey Railway, a lovingly preserved heritage steam railway. Travelling for around 10 miles through sweeping, heather-clad moorland, the route offers magnificent views of the surrounding Highlands, with the majestic Cairngorm Mountains providing a spectacular backdrop.

Day 4

‘The Jacobite’ Steam Train

Today we travel to Fort William to board the iconic ‘Jacobite’ Steam Train for what is widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest railway journeys. The 42-mile journey to the fishing port of Mallaig takes you through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Scottish Highlands.

Along the route, the train passes close to Loch Morar, the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, and Loch Nevis, the deepest seawater loch in Europe. One of the journey’s most memorable highlights is crossing the famous 21-arched Glenfinnan Viaduct, instantly recognisable from the Harry Potter films. From the viaduct, enjoy wonderful views across Loch Shiel and towards the Glenfinnan Monument. Time permitting, the train may pause on the viaduct, giving you a few precious moments to take in this spectacular Highland panorama.

At Glenfinnan Station, there will be time to stretch your legs and, if you wish, visit the West Highland Railway Museum, housed within the beautifully restored station building.

Beyond Glenfinnan, the journey continues through the picturesque villages of Lochailort, Arisaig and Morar. As the train passes Morar, look out for the famous silvery beaches that featured in the films Highlander and Local Hero.

On arrival in Mallaig, enjoy some free time to explore this charming fishing port and perhaps sample a leisurely lunch before rejoining the train for the return journey to Fort William.

Please note: The Jacobite Steam Train operates between mid-April and October only. Outside this period, the journey is operated by a scheduled diesel service. Early booking and payment are strongly recommended, as full payment for the Jacobite Steam Train is required at the time of booking. If the steam service is unavailable, the commuter diesel train provides an alternative option.

Day 5

Return home

Sadly, our Scottish adventure comes to an end today as we begin our journey home. After a wonderful tour filled with spectacular Highland scenery, historic towns and unforgettable journeys aboard some of Scotland’s most iconic railways, it’s time to say farewell to the Highlands.
