When it comes to Christmas Markets, nowhere does it better than Germany! The towns and cities along the Rhine and Moselle valleys provide an idyllic setting for a romantic Christmas market break. Half-timbered houses are festively decorated and are illuminated in splendour by the Christmas lights. The aromas of mulled wine from the local vineyards, gingerbread, roasted almonds and many more fill the streets. The region’s beautiful cities captivate visitors with rich history, labyrinthine old quarters, mediaeval market squares and striking cathedrals. The Christmas markets at Frankfurt are particularly famous and are quite large. If you want to visit the smaller Christmas markets, those in Rüdesheim, Boppard, Koblenz and Cochem are also popular. You will be spoilt for choice, but one thing you can be certain of is an unforgettable experience when visiting some of the best-loved Christmas markets in Germany.

Day 1
Depart the UK
Travel to Dover for the ferry or Eurotunnel crossing and continue to the Rhine Valley. On arrival at your hotel, you will have the evening at leisure.
Day 2
Rüdesheim Christmas Market
Rüdesheim is one of the most famous riverside towns on the Rhine, and with good reason. Spend your first full day exploring the magical Christmas markets in Rüdesheim, an exciting mix of shopping delights and different markets snaking their way through the streets. The Christmas market brings a distinctly festive feel to the romantic old town and its popular Drosselgasse. The charming stalls are dotted around the town selling handicrafts, including candle makers, glassblowers, and woodcarvers, alongside delicious food and drink. As well as a glass of warming glühwein, don’t forget to sample a Rüdesheimer coffee made with local brandy, Asbach.
A river cruise from Assmanshausen to Rüdesheim can be arranged.
Day 3
Cochem & Koblenz or Boppard Christmas Markets
This morning we travel to Cochem, located in the Moselle Valley. The town has a fantastic collection of half timbered houses, a fairytale castle and a pleasant riverside promenade. The Cochem Christmas markets are just as beautiful as the town itself; the festively decorated stalls sell various different gifts and handmade crafts. The mulled wine is brewed and produced locally.
En-route back to the hotel we stop off at Koblenz, located at the famous ‘German Corner’, where the Rhine and Moselle rivers converge. Koblenz is one of Germany’s oldest and most beautiful towns. Every year during the Advent season, the city is transformed into a festive paradise. The scent of freshly roasted almonds, mulled wine and gingerbread wafts through the streets. Stalls display handmade gifts and at Jesuitenplatz you will find a large Advent calendar, composed of the colourfully lit dormer windows of the baroque town hall.

Enjoy an en-route stop at Boppard where twinkling stars, Christmas baubles, the smell of biscuits, sounds of Christmas, fir trees, mulled wine and lots of festive cheer all await. Framed by beautiful old half-timbered houses, under the eyes of the town’s landmark, St Severus Church, the festively decorated Christmas stalls offer Christmas gifts and souvenirs as well as local food and drink specialities. The Christmas market in Boppard is a wonderful opportunity to get into the Christmas spirit.
Day 4
Frankfurt Christmas market
We spend the day at Frankfurt. Here, the Christmas market stretches through the city centre, from the Roßmarkt to the Zeil, Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz with its Rosa Weihnacht (Pink Christmas) and Paulsplatz, down to the Römerberg and the banks of the Main with the new children’s Christmas market. There are over 200 elaborately decorated stalls selling charming arts and crafts, Christmas decorations, gifts, and Christmas specialties from all over the world. On the Römerberg, the huge Christmas tree shines brightly against the picturesque backdrop of the old town.
Make sure to sample the many traditional local specialties. The famous Bethmännchen, a sweet marzipan pastry, are a must during the festive season. They pair perfectly with a cup of hot apple wine, an essential in Frankfurt, especially on cold & crisp winter days.
Day 5
Return to the UK
Depart the Rhine valley after breakfast and travel back through Germany, Belgium and France, heading for Calais for the ferry or Eurotunnel crossing. On arrival in the UK, continue the journey back home.
