In Galicia, North-West Spain, there is a magical place where, at Christmas time, Vigo, the largest port city in Spain, transforms into the ultimate festive extravaganza. Home to a massive fishing port plus ancient Roman ruins, neoclassical churches, and an authentic Galician old town. Every day, at 6 p.m., more than 10 million of LED lights and around 500 Christmas trees, makes the night come alive in around 350 of the 1700 streets of the city. The city also features a 110-foot tall electronic Christmas tree that displays a variety of interesting light patterns and designs in the Porta do Sol area. It is truly a spectacle to behold.
Vigo; Culture, History & Gastronomy
Situated at the heart of the Rías Baixas, Vigo is known as “The Atlantic Gate”. The old town is a stunning, lively area of streets and paths that meander towards the sea. From the impressive Praza da Constitución square to the banks of the Berbés or Rúa da Pescadería , where you can taste the city’s famous oysters, the “casco vello” is truly worth a visit, and also the perfect place for wine and tapas. Also, why not take a stroll to Castro Fotress to see beautiful gardens, ornate water features and enjoy city-scape views. Furthermore, throughout the city, there will be plenty of Christmas market stands featuring artificial snow cannons and artisanal crafts will help revellers get into the holiday spirit. Also those with a sweet tooth be sure to enjoy an colourful assortment of dried fruit and nuts coated in chocolate as well as a traditional hot chocolate and some delightful churros.
The Cíes Islands & The Atlantic Gate
As well as this, you will get the chance to visit the Cíes Islands; an amazing national marine-terrestrial park and one of the country’s most beautiful places, which is why the Romans named them the islands of the gods. Here, you will experience beach paradise with crystalline waters, in a natural environment that makes it a unique wildlife observatory. The Cíes archipelago is made up of three islands: Monte Agudo, O Faro and San Martiño. The first two are connected by a long strip of sand: Rodas Beach, considered one of the best beaches in the world.
