Aachen, Monschau and the Ahr Valley – NEW TOUR

  • Monschau

    Monschau
5 day tour
Price on request

This region boasts some fine examples of medieval architecture, including the superb Cathedral and Town Hall in Aachen.  Aachen is situated directly on the border with Belgium and the Netherlands and is Germany’s most westerly city.  Walk the cobbled streets of Monschau and drive past the vineyard dotted slops of the Ahr Valley, renowned for its spicy red wine. The Ahr River meanders through the bizarre rocky landscape with sudden twists and turns, past vineyards clinging to the barren stone.

Dates

Throughout 2024 and 2025 on request

Day 1

Depart the UK

Take the short sea crossing to France and continue to the Aachen area for the next four nights.

Day 2

Aachen Sightseeing

Meet up with a local guide for a walking tour to discover the highlights of this imperial frontier town including visits to the magnificent Cathedral, Town Hall and Elisenbrunnen Fountain.  The cathedral – the first monument in Germany to be included in the UNESCO Cultural Heritage list – and the gothic City Hall in which 32 German kings celebrated their coronations still form the heart of Aachen’s old city centre.  The attractive layout of the old city centre, the important historic monuments, the wells and baths over the hottest natural springs in Europe, the bustling activity in the streets and squares, the cultural diversity and quality and the many recreational and leisure activities make Aachen an exciting place to discover.  The Carolus-Thermen are one of the most modern and attractive thermal baths in Europe.

There will be time to wander at leisure for sightseeing or shopping.  Delicacies to be found in local bakeries include the spiced gingerbread known as ‘Aachener Printen’ or the ‘Rice Cake’, a light yeast dough filled with sweet and creamy rice.

Day 3

Ahr River Valley – Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler and Wine

A scenic drive through the Ahr River valley with beautiful rock formations, ruins, idyllic castles and steep vineyards.  It is one of the smallest wine making areas in the north of Germany and produces premium quality red wines.  Stop at Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler – one city/two centres!  Explore the romantic old town of Ahrweiler with its well-preserved half-timbered houses and Bad Neuenahr, the spa town with modern buildings, spas and green areas.  Winetastings and vineyard visits can be arranged.

Day 4

Monschau, the Eifel Mountains, Mustard and Glass

Monschau is one of the most picturesque villages in the region overlooked by the turreted Monschau Castle. Visit the Red House Museum, built in 1752, with its lavish furnishings.  A local speciality is Monschau Mustard and you can taste and purchase produce at the Mustard Mill.  There is the local brewery and museum or take a cruise on the Rursee and see the surrounding scenery of the Eifel National Park.  Monschau Glass Works is a fascinating place to watch expert glass-blowers demonstrate their skills with the option to make purchases.

Day 5

Depart Germany
