Suggested itinerary by coach
Day 1
Travel to Brussels
Take the short sea ferry crossing to Calais. Continue to Brussels and to your hotel for the next 3 nights. Before checking in at the hotel, make a short orientation tour of the city where you will see the Royal Palace, Royal Courts of Justice and European Parliament Buildings. Tonight, we will enjoy dinner together in the hotel.
Day 2
Horta Museum and Art Nouveau in Saint-Gilles
Board the coach for the short transfer to the Horta Museum for a private tour. The museum is dedicated to the life and work of the protagonist of Belgian Art Nouveau, Victor Horta, housed in his former town house and studio. Following this, we will have a guided walking tour in the footsteps of architects whose buildings are striking manifestoes of Art Nouveau. There will be an opportunity to visit Hannon House (optional).
The rest of the day and evening is at leisure.
Day 3
Comic Strip Centre and Belle Époque Pubs Tour
Depart after breakfast for a visit of the Belgian Comic Strip Centre, a masterpiece of Art Nouveau and designed by Victor Horta. This is not a private residence, but a ‘trade temple’ inaugurated in 1906. Perhaps visit the former Old England department store, now home to the Musical Instruments Museum, an Art Nouveau building constructed in 1899 out of girded steel and glass.
Continue with walking tour of pre-war Brussels pubs (2 drinks included) that offer a wide variety of atmospheres and some of them have kept their Art Nouveau or Art Deco decoration. The stained glass windows, elegant curved woodwork, precious fabrics, mirrors and shining counters are still witnesses of the Belle Époque, the Roaring Twenties and Jazzy Thirties. They also tell about the evolution of the trends and tastes: from the well-lit, big & noisy brassieres of the turn of the century to the more discreet, cosy and intimate bars of the interwar period.
Enjoy a farewell dinner in Restaurant Greenwich Modern, a magnificent Art Nouveau Brassiere with authentic Belgium Cuisine, friendly and unique atmosphere in Brussels.
Day 4
Return to the UK
After breakfast depart Brussels and drive to Calais for the ferry crossing to Dover, and home.
Optional extra day/visits
- Art Nouveau houses in Palmerston Street, the exquisite Maison Saint Cyr and The Cauchie House built in 1905 which was originally the home to Paul Cauchie and Caroline Voet, a pair of artists and decorators – if time allows, it may be possible to include these in the 4 day tour option.
