Set against the spectacular backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, the world-renowned Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo returns each August, bringing the Scottish capital to life with an unforgettable celebration of music, ceremony, theatre and dance.

But there’s so much more to discover beyond the Tattoo. Explore the grandeur of Edinburgh Castle, visit the historic Palace of Holyroodhouse, or simply wander the atmospheric streets and discover the city’s fascinating heritage.

For those looking to escape the bustle, Edinburgh’s beautiful parks, gardens and surrounding countryside offer plenty of opportunities to relax and take in the scenery. And, of course, the city’s shops, boutiques and high street provide the perfect excuse for a little retail therapy.

Whether you’re drawn by the spectacle of the Tattoo, the history and culture, or simply the chance to explore one of Scotland’s most captivating cities, Edinburgh promises an experience to remember.

Day 1

Travel to your hotel

The Greatdays’ team can offer suggestions for a stop-off on the journey. Enjoy time to relax before dinner at the hotel.

Day 2

Free time in Edinburgh and evening at The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo

After breakfast we head into Edinburgh for a full day with plenty of time to see the city’s many attractions. Optional visits can be arranged to visit the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the King’s official residence in Scotland, and the home of Mary, Queen of Scots. Visits can also be arranged to The Royal Yacht Britannia, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, or perhaps a relaxing boat trip on the Firth of Forth.  You will have ample time to get something to eat before making your way to the Castle for the start of a spectacular evening of entertainment.

Note that the streets leading up to the Castle are cobbled and that there are steps leading to the Tattoo seating. At the end of the show we make our way to the coach to return to the hotel late evening.

Day 3

Options for each Hotel  for Day 3 Itinerary:

Salutation, Perth:
Enjoy a scenic day exploring the beautiful Trossachs and Loch Lomond, with time to soak up the charm of the picturesque village of Luss. There will also be the opportunity to take a relaxing cruise on Loch Lomond (additional cost), offering wonderful views across the loch and surrounding countryside.

New Lanark Mill:
Enjoy a scenic journey through the beautiful Scottish Borders, known for its rolling hills, picturesque villages and stunning countryside. There will be time to explore the charming market town of Peebles at leisure, with its independent shops, cafés and historic character, before continuing through the scenic Borders landscape.

Keavil House Hotel:
Discover the beautiful Kingdom of Fife, travelling through its picturesque towns and scenic countryside before heading to Dundee. Enjoy time to explore the impressive V&A Dundee, Scotland’s international design museum, with its fascinating exhibitions and striking waterfront setting.

Day 4

Travel Home

After enjoying your final Full Scottish Breakfast, it’s time to bid farewell to Scotland and board the coach for our journey home. Sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery as we travel south, with plenty of time to reflect on the wonderful memories made throughout the tour. Greatdays staff will once again be on hand with suggestions for a suitable stop-off along the way, should you wish to stretch your legs and enjoy a little more of the journey.

The Salutation ***

Step back in time at The Salutation, a charming historic hotel dating back to 1699. Ideally located in the heart of Perth, it’s just a short stroll from the River Tay and Perth train station. Enjoy the hotel’s elegant restaurant, welcoming bar and relaxed lounge areas, with high teas, light lunches and evening meals available.


Option

Add an extra day(s) and discover more of what this part of Scotland has to offer. Perhaps visit Stirling Castle, Scotland’s ‘Royal’ castle, stopping off on the way to see the Falkirk Wheel, the world’s only rotating boat lift, and The Kelpies, the remarkable 30-metre high horse head sculptures. The Greatdays’ team can offer a range of suggestions to suit your specific requirements.

Please note the Tattoo tickets are subject to availability and have been costed at the high bracket price. If we are successful with booking tickets for a lower price bracket, you will be entitled to reimbursement/added hotel value before travel. Full details are usually available in the late Autumn with confirmed ticket prices. Please note that full payment is required to enable us to request and book tickets from the Tattoo office, and we will contact you later in the year to discuss this.  Please note that there is a £1.50 booking fee per ticket (included).
