Hovercraft crossing to the Isle of Wight and ride on the Island Line Railway
Today is the highlight of our trip as we board our Hovercraft at Southsea for the journey across the Solent to Ryde on the Isle of Wight. The short crossing features a special Hovercraft demonstration including 360 degree turns and deflating the skirt to ‘float like a boat’. Once we arrive at Ryde, we take the Island Line train, made up of restored London Underground trains, to the seaside resort of Shanklin. We then return to Ryde by train where there is time to explore the islands largest town before boarding the Hovercraft for the 10 minute journey back to the mainland.
The Hovercraft Museum and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard
Today we visit The Hovercraft Museum in Lee-on-Solent, a working museum which preserves and maintains the crafts in it’s care, including those featured in James Bond film ‘Die Another Day’. The Portsmouth Historic Dockyard has museums in Portsmouth and Gosport. Your group can choose from Gosport’s The Royal Navy Submarine Museum and Explosion! The Museum of Naval Firepower, or perhaps visit the main site in Portsmouth.
Return home or Extra Day – Scenic Drive through the New Forest
Today we take a scenic drive through the New Forest, famous for its unspoiled woods and marshlands, where wildlife such as horses and cows can be seen wandering freely. We call into the historic town of Lymington, a colourful ancient seaport with a rich maritime history. Next we head to the ‘capital’ of New Forest, Lyndhurst. Towering over the skyline is the pre-Raphaelite church of St Michael and All Angels where the grave of former Lyndhurst resident Alice Liddel, Lewis Carroll’s inspiration for Alice in Wonderland, can be found.
Depending on your route you can call into the beautiful cities of Salisbury or Winchester, both skylines are dominated by their stunning cathedrals.
