Day 5

Basel – Jungfraujoch – Basel

Today is the highlight of our tour – an excursion to the mighty Jungfraujoch.  The coach will depart for Lauterbrunnen (approximately 2.5 hours) and then board the rack-railway that will ascend the Eiger and Monch mountains to Europe’s highest railway station.  See spectacular scenery as the train climbs steadily with breathtaking views of snow-capped summits and glaciers.  Travel through tunnels that have been built with remarkable engineering until the train reaches the summit at over 11,000 feet!  Marvel at the scenery from one of the many viewing platforms and take lunch including drink in the panoramic restaurant before descending by train to Eigergletscher.  From here we will board a gondola lift to Grindelwald, a beautiful alpine village overlooked by the sheer face of the Eiger Mountain, and then return to the ship by coach (approximately 2.5-3 hours).

Enjoy a final dinner on board whilst the ship sails to Strasbourg.

Important information regarding  this excursion:

As you are travelling to high altitudes, freezing temperatures exist in summer as they do in winter.  Ensure you have warm clothing including coat, closed-toes sensible shoes/boots, gloves, hat and sunglasses (to protect your eyes from the high-mountain sun).

There are also medical precautions to be aware of as the train climbs higher, the air pressure drops and, consequently, so does the oxygen levels.  People in good/perfect health can usually adapt quickly to these but if you are in any doubt or have any heart, lung, vascular or blood diseases please get medical advice beforehand.
