On this unusual tour we take a look at Cheshire’s canal, waterway and salt producing heritage. We soak up the engineering marvel that is the Anderton Boat Lift, visit the fascinating Lion Salt Works near Northwich, immerse ourselves in the canal history at the National Waterways Museum in Ellesmere Port, take a relaxing boat trip on the River Dee in Chester and visit Blakemere Craft Village.

Anderton Boat Lift, river cruise and Lion Salt Works
The Anderton Boat Lift was built in 1875 to lift cargo boats the 50 feet from the Weaver Navigation to the Trent & Mersey canal. Our canal boat experience includes 30 minutes on the list and a relaxing 45 minute return cruise along the River Weaver to Northwich. After free tine for lunch, we travel to the nearby Lion Salt Works. This £10m project opened in June 2015 offering fascinating journey through the life of the country’s last open-plan salt making site. Our final stop is at nearby Blakemere Village, a collection of craft shops set in an around the stable block built in 1878.
Day 3
National Waterways Museum and Chester boat trip
Today we visit the National Waterways Museum in Ellesmere Port, located at the old industrial docks at the junction of the Manchester Ship canal and Shropshire Union canal. There’s much to explore, from the handsome Victorian Buildings which house the museum’s fascinating displays, to the locks and moorings, home to colourful historic and visiting narrow boats.
We then travel to Chester for a relaxing cruise on the River Dee. Then there’s free time in this historic city. Don’t miss ‘The Rows’, the 700 year old two-tiered shopping galleries. See the world famous Eastgate clock, built to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897. take a walk on the most complete city walls in Britain, dating from the Roman occupation.
