Day 1

Travel to Pembrokeshire

Day 2

Full day in Cardigan, Ceredigion

This morning we visit the Norman fortress Cardigan Castle that is built next to the River Teifi. With its community and cultural ethos, the Castle houses sweeping lawns, an orchard, the hanging garden and regency vegetable garden within the mighty walls. Don’t miss the Sword of Peace Sculpture when on a fine day the sun shines through lighting up the grass with a colourful hue.
In the afternoon, we spend free time in Cardigan to have lunch and explore the town. The town centre is full of Georgian architecture housing independent shops selling gifts, arts and crafts. The Guildhall Market building is well worth a visit, with lots of Welsh independent businesses selling their wares.

Day 3

Picton Castle and Gardens, St Davids Cathedral and St Davids Bishop’s Palace

Before heading to Picton Castle, we spend the morning visiting St Davids to the west of the county. St Davids Cathedral, within touching distance of the Atlantic ocean, is a site of pilgrimage for over 800 years. It has survived an earthquake in the 13th Century with alterations over the years. More recently, Sir George Gilbert Scott worked on the restoration of the fabric of the building. St Davids Bishop’s Palace is just a short walk away from the Cathedral. Between 1328 and 1347, the original building was improved and reinvented into a Palace by Henry de Gower. Now, the Palace stands in ruins but some of the original features still remain and the Palace has kept its magnificence.

We travel to Picton Castle and Gardens for lunch in the Courtyard Restaurant that serves light lunches and hot and cold meals. Picton Castle contrasts its medieval exterior featuring arrow slits and towers with its impressive Georgian interiors making Picton a definite must-see in this area. The Castle dates back to the 14th Century set in 50 acres of grounds, it has been in the Philipps family for over 500 years. Explore the colourful interiors with high ceilings and beautiful cornices of the principle state rooms, the kitchens and its medieval undercroft with rib-vaulted ceiling.

Day 4

Tenby and scenic drive

Today we drive an hour south to the popular coastal town of Tenby. We will have time for exploring the bustling, pretty centre of Tenby with its colourful houses overlooking the sea. The picturesque fishing harbour is worthy of a photograph or two; you may see the fishermen come ashore after making their catches. Tenby is perfect for strolling along looking at the shops and enjoying being a tourist for the morning.

The coach will take us on a scenic drive in the afternoon along the Pembrokeshire Heritage Coast and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park called Mynydd Preseli. Saundersfoot is highly recommended.
