Sunday 14th April 2019, Sunday 19th May 2019
Arrive in Manchester.
There is the option to spend free time in the city centre or venture out to Salford Quays. Check into your hotel and take advantage of their luxurious pool facilities before dinner.
Gorton Monastery and GMP Museum.
Gothic masterpiece Gorton Monastery is a former Fransican church and friary. Derelict for many years, it was saved from ruin and on our guided tour we will learn all about the building dramatic history, followed by a two course lunch. Next stop is the Police Museum, a former police station with authentic Victorian jail cells and magistrates court dating back to 1895. Return to the hotel to relax before dinner.
Victoria Baths and Elizabeth Gaskell’s House.
This morning we visit Victoria Baths, winner of BBC Two’s first Restoration program. Opened in 1906 the baths are undergoing a continued restoration project which we will learn about on our guided tour. Next stop is Elizabeth Gaskell’s House, former home of the famous author. The house fell into dire straits and was even student accommodation before it was beautifully restored. We enjoy an ‘afternoon tea’ lunch here before returning home.
