Middle Temple is one of the four ancient Inns of Court, legal societies which have the exclusive right of admitting people to the English bar.

From the cobbled, gas-lit streets through to the Hall itself, Middle Temple has been a home for legal professionals since it was first built. Shakespeare’s first performance of Twelfth Night took place in The Hall in the presence of Queen Elizabeth I in February 1602. Shakespeare’s Henry VI, Part I, refers to the ‘Temple Garden’ where members of Middle Temple were asked to choose a side in the looming War of the Roses by plucking a red rose for Lancaster or a white rose for York.

Your expert tour guide will take you around Middle Temple, sharing its rich history. Following the tour, guests will enjoy our exclusive ‘War of the Roses’ afternoon tea in one of the historic event rooms. The savoury and sweet tea is based on recipes from Yorkshire and Lancashire and every guest will have a keepsake menu with a potted history of both Middle Temple and the War of the Roses. Dinner can be arranged in your hotel this evening or alternatively a visit to the theatre maybe.
