The Magical Caves of Valkenburg Christmas Markets
Valkenburg Christmas Markets:
A whimsical underground experience
It’s not everyday that you can experience Christmas Markets in a cave! During the Christmas Season, the residents of Valkenburg transform the extraordinary caves under the city into spectacular Christmas Markets. Shop for Christmas decorations and gifts from more than 50 shops inside the Velvet and Municipal Caves. Bright lights and Christmas trees with charming decorations illuminate the caves’ darkest corners. Exploring the impressive cave structures is a truly magical experience to delight both adults and children alike. There are various types of merchandise available from hand-blown glass ornaments to jewellery. Enjoy Belgian chocolates or warm up with a mug of hot chocolate and hot spiced wine.
Located in the southern Netherlands, the beautiful town of Valkenburg is the country’s oldest tourist centre. It is famously surrounded by rolling landscape and pretty villages and boasts many attractions. These include the famous castle ruins, museums as well as the marlstone caves.
Located near the German border, Valkenburg also provides a great base to explore a number of wonderful nearby cities. Only a short drive away, discover Maastricht. Wander through the city’s famous Christmas Markets, enjoy a bit of last minute shopping, go skating on the ice rink or walk the magical path of lights. Aachen, over the nearby border into Germany is equally bedecked in festive cheer and Cologne, about an hour and a quarter’s drive away contains a huge magical Christmas Market.
With the towns decorated for Christmas and a number of Christmas events and parades to enjoy, you’re sure to be full with festive cheer!

Valkenburg Christmas Market Caves
Spend the full day exploring Valkenburg and the town’s magnificent Christmas markets, held in caves deep under the city. Drink hot chocolate whilst browsing the stalls and take in the magical location and atmosphere. It is unlike any Christmas Market you have ever seen!
Visitors can easily spend hours exploring the nooks and hidden corners of the caves while being browsing winter clothing and accessories, jewellery, antiques, desserts, cooking utensils and more. Some of the most popular items found at Valkenburg include hand-blown glass ornaments and Belgian chocolates. However, it is the impressive structures of the caves rather than the merchandise that make the event as popular as it is.
What’s more, in addition to the caves, there are the castle ruins, museums as well as a chair lift offering great views. Also on offer is the South Limburg Steam Train and a collection of shops, street cafés and restaurants.
Festive Germany and Holland
Having enjoyed the markets on offer in Valkenburg, enjoy more markets with Maastricht, Aachen or Cologne’s Christmas Markets all available in a short distance.
Maastricht, the southernmost city in the Netherlands, is also known as the ‘Paris of the Benelux’. Under the moniker of ‘Magical Maastricht’, the city goes into full Christmas mode! Vrijthof Square, in the heart of the town is the centre of Christmas actitivies, with a large market, ice rink, ferris wheel and much more to discover!
Head over the border into Germany to discover the charming town of Aachen. Enjoy free time exploring the great old town and its cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Still often referred to as Aix-la-Chapelle, after Charlemagne’s great Palatine Chapel, now part of its glorious treasure-filled Cathedral, it is and a ‘must’ for any art-lover. Aachen’s brightly lit Christmas market is set around the cathedral and town hall. This lovingly decorated ‘Christmas village’ on the market square has something for everyone. One local speciality you really must try is the Aachen Printen, a kind of gingerbread.
Cologne’s Christmas Market contains about 160 festive stalls covered with red canopies. The backdrop of Cologne Cathedral adds a dramatic element to the markets and there is even an ice rink.
