Day 2

Chartwell and St George RAF Chapel of Remembrance, Hall Place and Gardens

A look behind the scenes today at Chartwell, the home of Sir Winston Churchill with the rooms remaining much as they were when he lived there. In the afternoon we visit St George’s RAF Chapel of Remembrance at Biggin Hill, a memorial to those pilots who gave their lives in the Battle of Britain and other conflicts. The Tudor house at Hall Place and Gardens in Bexley became an intercept centre codenamed Santa Fe. A group of American Signal Corps who were based there during World War II deciphered Luftwaffe signals and helped in the enigma code-breaking operation run from Bletchley Park.

Day 3

Dover Castle, Secret Wartime Tunnels and the Kent Battle of Britain Museum

A morning visit to Dover Castle. Hidden beneath the imposing fortifications are a network of secret wartime tunnels. During WWII the castle’s historic tunnels were extended and used as a command centre where Winston Churchill oversaw the Battle of Britain. In the afternoon we visit the Kent Battle of Britain Museum, the oldest established, largest and most important collection of Battle of Britain artefacts on show in the country.
