Experience the magic of light, fire and theatre
Discover the Winter Wonderland of Wonderlicht, a magical theatre walk in Alkmaar, The Netherlands. During an evening walk in Alkmaar you will experience countless magical street theatre acts in a setting through the historic Bolwerk where you will be surprised by national and international street theatre acts along beacons of light and fire. Wonderlicht surprises, amazes and inspires.
The walk takes place every 15 minutes and leads you through the historic city park. A beautiful route lit by fire trees, fire pits, torches and so much more! Suddenly you end up in the middle of a theatre performance. The route ends again at Canadaplein, but not after you are surprised once more by an attractively lit Grote Kerk where you can sit down for a well-filled cup of soup with country bread!
The Festival Heart is on Canadaplein. There you will find, sheltered by a large marque tents, cosy sitting areas, acoustic music, speakers and poets. Sit back by the fire pit with a marshmallow or glass of mulled wine.
The walk is an experience for young and old. Wonderlicht Alkmaar will take place in February 2024 – dates TBC. After the successful first edition in 2020, it finally returns.

Day 1
Travel to the Netherlands
Make your way to Dover short crossing from Calais and make your way through France and Belgium to your hotel in Alkmaar, Netherlands.
Alternatively, take the overnight crossing from Hull or Newcastle.
Day 2
Alkmaar, Netherlands
Alkmaar is known as the city of cheese in Holland, but that title covers only part of what the town has to offer. It has a beautiful old centre with many historic monuments, great shopping districts and countless welcoming terraces, cafes and restaurants for every budget. Alkmaar also has a range of interesting museums, including the Stedelijk Museum, Beer Museum, Beatles Museum and naturally the Cheese Museum. Then enjoy an evening walk in Alkmaar, where you will experience countless magical street theatre acts in a setting of light and fire. The walk is an experience for young and old.
Day 3
Alkmaar, Netherlands
Today, is again at your leisure. Perhaps, visit Amsterdam, which is located only 35 mins from Alkmaar. Then this evening, Without taking a seat in a grandstand, you will end up in the middle of a theatre performance and along the way the fireworks adorn the route. Afterwards you can sit down for dinner in the attractively lit Grote Kerk at long tables and by candlelight.
Day 4
Return to the UK
Make your back way through France and Belgium to Calais for the short sea crossing to Dover.
Alternatively, take the overnight crossing back to Hull or Newcastle.
