Day 2

Amalfi Coast

Today, there is the opportunity to visit the luxurious Amalfi Coast. This breathtaking tour will take you through the rugged hills of the Campania region, before the hills give way to the glittering Mediterranean Sea and an incredible blend of colour and beauty spread across the jagged hillside providing incomparably stunning scenery. Visit historic Amalfi, a town that hosts cobbled hilltop streets and, most notably, an over-sized Byzantine-influenced cathedral. In Positano, the Amalfi Coast’s poster child, vertiginous houses tumble down to the sea in a cascade of sun-bleached peach, pink and terracotta. Ravello is a beautiful resort town boasting beauty that has attracted writers and visionaries for centuries. All as magnificent as the other, this day trip will be an unforgettable experience for everyone.

Day 3

Herculaneum & Oplontis

Today, why not head south to discover the ruins of Herculaneum. Another town struck during the infamous eruption. Though Pompeii is more widely-known, Herculaneum is better preserved. With the second stories of buildings intact, frescoes and mosaics in beautiful condition and even some wooden furniture to be seen, slip into life in this Roman town. Admire the wealth of archaeological treasures: ancient monuments, preserved mosaics and fossils nearly 2,000 years old.

Also, another of the Vesuvian archaeological sites, buried following the dramatic eruption in 79 A.D is the spectacular Oplontis, probably the one that offers the most significant monumental evidence of the Pompeii suburbs. The group of Roman era buildings found here, beginning in the Bourbon period, in the modern city of Torre Annunziata, is comparable to an actual city suburb, administratively subject to the jurisdiction of Pompeii.
However, what is special about Oplontis is the presence of two monumental buildings of different purposes: Villa A (the so-called Villa of Poppea), a grandiose and luxurious residential complex and the Villa B (of L. Crassius Tertius), currently not open to the public, that was a business centre around processing agricultural products, particularly wine and oil.

Day 4

Vesuvius & Pompeii

On this day why not get up close to fiery Mt. Vesuvius on a tour of this incredible Volcano. After travelling to the highest vehicle-accessible point, you’ll hike for 25 minutes up a mountain path to the crater’s lip. Peer deep into the earth at its smouldering interior, and then gaze outwards at the Bay of Naples with spectacular views of the bay, as a volcanologist explains the volcano’s history and the devastating impact of its AD 79 eruption.

Then experience two of the most extraordinary places in the world, Pompeii and Herculaneum. Led by a local guide, begin your day by marvelling at the UNESCO-listed site of Pompeii, which lay buried under volcanic ash for centuries following Mount Vesuvius’ eruption in 79 AD. Try to envision life centuries ago as you pass excavations of the Teatro Grande, which once housed up to 5,000 spectators, the Forum and the ‘Lupanare’ brothel.

Additional ideas

This area has so much to offer, we will be happy to tailor your ideal tour. Perhaps add a day visiting the beautiful island of Capri or you may want to travel back in time to Paestum, the ancient Greek ruins, a truly enchanting and atmospheric place, and a ‘must’ on any classical tour of Italy. Paestum, or as it was formerly known as, Poseidonia, was a city named in honour of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. It was founded in the 6th century BC by Greek settlers and fell under Roman control in 273 BC. near-abandonment following raids from the Saracens and many others over the centuries. There was a revival of interest with visits from Grand Tourists and unrelenting travellers like Shelley and Goethe sparking interest. The ancient ruins became a protected entity and are now a perfectly intriguing place to visit.
