The Emerald Coast

Imagine, relaxing on blanched white sand as the subtle turquoise waters drift along the horizon. This is the quintessential experience of the emerald coast. A stretch of land along the northeast coast of Sardinia like no where else in Europe. The capital of the ‘Costa Smeralda‘ is Porto Cervo, home to upscale hotels and shops. In the summer, the town is filled with hundreds of yachts and famous personalities and it is quite likely that you will find yourself in the piazza’s, surrounded by stars of the cinema and the television.

An island like no other

In the Sea and Sardinia,  it was D.H Lawrence who once said “This land resembles no other place. Sardinia is something else. Enchanting spaces and distances to travel – nothing finished, nothing definitive. It is like freedom itself”. This of course was written in 1921 and many things have changed in the course of 100 years however, the beauty and uniqueness of this island has not. The Sards think of themselves as Sardinian first and Italian second and they are immensely proud of their heritage. Non more evident than in the city of Alghero in North Sardinia.  The city’s Catalan Gothic buildings include the Cattedrale di Santa Maria, with an imposing bell tower, are like no other Italian city. However it is the Algherese (or Alguerès) dialect, where the ever-lasting remnants of the Catalan conquest of the 14th Century can be found.

Corsica

Barely 10 miles of sparkling waters separate the islands of Corsica and Sardinia. Despite their proximity, the two islands offer distinct, unique holiday experiences and diverse landscapes. On a day trip from Sardinia, visit the buzzing port town of Bonifacio. Due to its stunning natural setting, the ancient fortress town is an essential stop for all visitors to Corsica. Protected by vast smooth walls, the limestone cliffs above bear down on marina, full of busy bars, clubs and brasseries along the quayside.

Discover this island paradise and to see more of Sardinia, why not visit the Scintillating South of Sardinia.
